BARACK OBAMA - CHINA

Numerous economic issues involving China and America are currently facing us. China is manipulating its currency; worsening our economy for its own benefit. Specifically, China illegally subsidizes its auto parts industry. Subsidizing auto parts means that China sells their products cheaper than America does, so consumers would undoubtedly buy from China. In the long run, this proves to be beneficial to China because once America’s auto parts industry has deteriorated into nothing, then there will be no competition, and China can raise the price back to normal.
Furthermore, this has caused our auto parts industry to decline, worsening our economy, and minimizing the already insufficient number of American jobs. In an article called “U.S Protests China Auto, Parts Industry” by David Shepardson, he writes, “U.S. auto parts industry employment fell in half from 2001 to 2010, as hundreds of factories closed — most in the Midwest — cutting more than 400,000 jobs.” (Detroitnews.com) With our economy in a current recession, we are already dealing with the repercussions of job loss. It is devastating when America loses more job opportunities because of China’s illegal subsidies.
I recently shut down a Chinese-owned wind-farm stationed in Ohio, on the grounds that it is a national security risk. In an article called Chinese-Owned Company Sues Obama Over Wind-farm Project, by Sara Forden, she writes, “Obama’s order blocking Ralls from acquiring the wind- farm assets was the first time in 22 years a president has blocked a transaction on national security grounds.” (businessweek.com) Although China decided to sue us, claiming that it was unconstitutional to shutdown their wind-farm, this whole fiasco symbolizes to China that America is strong and willing to take action. This proves to Americans that I am willing to take severe action, but only for the true benefit of America according to my own opinion.

Furthermore, China’s growing power and influence threatens America, causing the “Pacific Pivot”. This pivot means that I am focusing more of our military attention on the Southern parts of Asia, for the purpose of involving America with Chinese affairs. With the growth of China’s power, it is important to maintain a relationship of cooperation. Our military serves the purpose of keeping peace and mutual respect.

Romney took these issues with China as a great opportunity for campaign ads. He claimed that Obama is being too soft on China and that he would obviously be more severe in order to give Americans what they deserve. Romney and his supporters believe that he has taken very little action, andthat because of Obama, the American economy and the workers suffer. In an article by Tyler Durden, called “Is China a Currency Manipulator?” Romney says, “We can’t just sit back and let China run all over us. People say, “Well, you’ll start a trade war.” There’s one going on right now, folks. They’re stealing our jobs. And we’re gonna stand up to China.” (zerohedge.com) Our trade industry with China is very valuable to us because we need their products. Therefore, if Romney does indeed cause a trade war, then our valuable trade with China could be unfixable and irreplaceable. In addition, he criticizes Obama’s “Pacific Pivot” by saying it is under-resourced and that we are excluding allied countries. However, this move to start focusing on China is completely necessary for keeping the peace, so that our relationship with them is maintained. If Romney provides this “pivot” with more resources, meaning that he will get more people involved, than it has now, than it could possibly provoke the Chinese to act against us and increase our deficit. All that Obama has done is solely and deliberately for the benefit of America, conceived with careful thought.
Obama’s careful, yet strict action against China will suit America’s needs best. By using the military to watch China’s increasing power, we can maintain our beneficial relationship with them. We cannot afford to lose this relationship because of our dependence on them, however, we do need to fix the economic problem. It will be better for America if these problems are dealt with care by Obama rather than with the reckless intentions of Romney, shown by his future plans for the “Pacific pivot” and his harsh plans for stopping the currency manipulation.
